NEW TO THE LNAT?
Start here
A simple introduction to understanding the LNAT, checking your deadlines and beginning your preparation without feeling overwhelmed.
The LNAT does not test your knowledge of law. It examines skills including careful reading, reasoning and the ability to present a clear written argument.
Your first five steps
Follow these steps in order. You do not need to buy a course or complete a full practice test immediately.
STEP 1
Check whether your course requires the LNAT
Only certain universities and law courses use the LNAT. Check the precise requirements for every course you are considering, including its UCAS course code.
STEP 2
Find your correct deadline
Deadlines vary between universities. Some applicants must sit the test considerably earlier than others. Check the official dates before planning your preparation or booking your appointment.
STEP 3
Understand the two sections
Section A
You read a series of passages and answer multiple-choice questions. The questions examine comprehension, inference and the analysis of arguments.
Section B
You choose one question from a selection and write an essay. The purpose is to communicate and defend a clear, relevant and well-structured argument.
Important: You are not expected to arrive with specialist legal knowledge. Always check the current test format on the official LNAT website.
STEP 4
Begin with free official material
Before paying for books, tutoring or practice services, explore the official tutorial, practice tests, sample essays and preparation guidance. This will give you the most reliable picture of the current test.
STEP 5
Establish a calm preparation routine
Try a small amount of official material first and identify what you find difficult. Work on one weakness at a time before moving to full timed practice.
- Familiarise: learn how the test works.
- Diagnose: identify difficulties with comprehension, inference, timing or essay structure.
- Practise: concentrate on one skill at a time.
- Simulate: introduce realistic timed practice.
- Review: understand why each answer was right or wrong.
Before you book
- Check the deadline for every university and course.
- Allow time to find a suitable test-centre appointment.
- Check whether you may qualify for an LNAT bursary before paying.
- Arrange any required examination access arrangements before booking a standard test.
- Make sure the personal details used for your booking are accurate.
- Check the identification requirements for test day.
Remember
Your first practice score is only a starting point. Use it to identify what to work on rather than treating it as a prediction of your eventual result or university prospects.
No book, course, tutor or website can guarantee a particular LNAT score or university offer.
