Who we are

LNAT.co.uk Student Community is an independent online discussion community for aspiring law students. It is not operated by or affiliated with the official LNAT administrators, participating universities, UCAS or any university.

For privacy enquiries, contact hello@lnat.co.uk.

Information we collect

When you visit or use the community, we may collect:

  • Your chosen username, display name and email address.
  • Information you voluntarily add to your profile.
  • Topics, replies, reports and other content you submit.
  • Your IP address, browser information and basic technical logs.
  • Records relating to account confirmation, moderation and security.
  • Communication and subscription preferences.

Passwords are stored in a protected, encrypted form and are not visible to the site administrator.

Please do not publish sensitive personal information. This includes addresses, telephone numbers, school details, application numbers, medical information and information about another person without their permission.

How we use information

We use personal information to:

  • Create, secure and administer member accounts.
  • Provide forum discussions and community features.
  • Send registration confirmations, password resets and requested notifications.
  • Prevent spam, fraud, abuse and unauthorised access.
  • Review reported or moderated content.
  • Enforce the Community Rules.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and improve the website.
  • Respond to enquiries and comply with legal obligations.

Our lawful bases may include performing the service requested by members, our legitimate interests in operating and protecting the community, consent where specifically requested, and compliance with legal obligations.

What other people can see

Forum posts are generally public. Your display name, profile information and published contributions may be visible to visitors and could appear in search results after the community launches.

Do not use your real name as your display name unless you are comfortable making it public. Information copied or quoted by another member may remain in a discussion even if your original post is later changed.

Young users

The community may be used by people under 18. We collect only the information reasonably needed to operate an account and do not require members to publish their real name, school, location or contact details.

Young users should avoid sharing information that could identify or locate them. Reports involving the safety or privacy of a young person will be treated as a priority.

Cookies

The website uses necessary cookies to support login sessions, security, preferences and essential forum functions. These cookies are required for services requested by the user.

If optional analytics, advertising or other non-essential cookies are introduced, information will be provided and consent requested where required before those cookies are used.

Sharing information

We do not sell membersโ€™ personal information.

Information may be processed by service providers that support website hosting, email delivery, security, backups and forum operation. These providers should only process information as needed to provide their services.

Information may also be disclosed when reasonably necessary to comply with the law, protect a personโ€™s safety, investigate misuse or defend legal rights.

International processing

Some technical service providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where this applies, reasonable steps will be taken to use providers and safeguards appropriate to UK data-protection requirements.

How long information is retained

Account information is normally retained while an account remains active.

Security and moderation records may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to prevent abuse, resolve disputes or meet legal obligations. Backup copies may remain temporarily until they are overwritten through the normal backup cycle.

If an account is deleted using the forumโ€™s soft-deletion process, personal account information will be removed or anonymised. Published contributions may remain under an anonymous identifier so discussions are not disrupted.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights to:

  • Request access to your personal information.
  • Ask for inaccurate information to be corrected.
  • Request deletion or restriction of information.
  • Object to certain uses of your information.
  • Request a portable copy of eligible information.
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

To make a request, email hello@lnat.co.uk. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request.

Security

Reasonable technical and administrative measures are used to protect member information. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, so members should use a strong, unique password and keep their login details private.

Automated decisions

We may use automated tools to identify likely spam or suspicious activity. Flagged content may be held for human moderation. We do not use solely automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on members.

Complaints

Please contact hello@lnat.co.uk first if you have a privacy concern so that we can investigate it.

You may also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissionerโ€™s Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when the community, its features or legal requirements change. The revised date will be displayed at the top of this page.
