Prepare for the LNAT

The LNAT is designed to assess skills used in the study of law, including reading carefully, analysing arguments, identifying assumptions and communicating ideas clearly. It is not a test of legal knowledge, and there is no set body of facts to memorise.

Effective preparation therefore means becoming familiar with the test, practising under realistic time limits and developing the ability to evaluate unfamiliar arguments calmly and accurately.

LNAT.co.uk is an independent student community. It is not connected with or endorsed by the LNAT Consortium, Pearson VUE or any university. Always check the official LNAT website for the latest test information.

Understanding the test

The LNAT lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes and has two sections.

Section A: Multiple-choice questions

You have 95 minutes to answer 42 questions based on 12 argumentative passages. Each passage is followed by three or four questions. This section tests how accurately you can understand, interpret and analyse written arguments.

Section B: Essay

You have 40 minutes to answer one of three essay questions. This section tests whether you can develop a clear argument, organise your ideas and express them effectively. The official guidance recommends a maximum of 750 words and suggests that approximately 500โ€“600 words is normally suitable.

Before using any commercial preparation material, familiarise yourself with the free guidance and practice resources available on the official LNAT website: https://lnat.ac.uk/how-to-prepare/

How to prepare effectively

  1. Learn the format first

Understand the instructions, timings and question styles before trying to improve your score. This prevents unfamiliarity with the test from using up valuable time.

  1. Read actively

Regularly read well-written journalism, commentary and essays covering unfamiliar subjects. As you read, ask:

โ€ข What is the writerโ€™s main conclusion?
โ€ข What evidence supports it?
โ€ข Which assumptions are being made?
โ€ข Is any relevant information missing?
โ€ข What is the strongest counterargument?

  1. Practise Section A carefully

Accuracy matters as much as speed. Begin without strict time pressure and review why each answer is right or wrong. Once your reasoning becomes more consistent, introduce realistic time limits.

Base answers on what the passage actually says. Avoid selecting an answer simply because it agrees with your own knowledge or opinion.

  1. Practise planning Section B essays

A short plan can help you state a clear position, arrange your main points logically, consider a counterargument and reach a reasoned conclusion. Practise producing a focused plan before writing complete timed essays.

  1. Review your practice

Do not rely only on the number of questions you complete. Keep a record of recurring problems, such as overlooking qualifying words, confusing evidence with conclusions, rushing difficult passages or spending too long on one question.

A simple weekly preparation plan

A manageable weekly routine might include:

โ€ข Two Section A practice sessions, followed by a careful review of every mistake
โ€ข One essay-planning session using two or three possible questions
โ€ข One complete timed essay
โ€ข Regular reading of quality journalism and commentary
โ€ข A short weekly review of progress and recurring difficulties

The amount of preparation you need will depend on your starting point and available time. Consistent, focused practice is generally more useful than occasional long sessions.

As the test approaches, complete official practice materials under realistic conditions. Allow time afterwards to review your reasoning rather than simply recording your score.

Important reminders

โ€ข There is no universal LNAT pass mark. Universities consider LNAT performance in different ways and alongside other parts of an application.

โ€ข Prioritise the official preparation materials. The LNAT Consortium does not endorse commercial coaching providers or third-party preparation products.

โ€ข Check registration, identification, test-centre and access-arrangement requirements directly with the official LNAT service.

โ€ข Do not share or request remembered questions from a live test. Discussion should focus on preparation methods, general skills and publicly available practice material.

โ€ข Information and deadlines can change. Verify important details at https://lnat.ac.uk/ before booking or making application decisions.
